The Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme 2024/2025: Applications are open to international students worldwide for the fully funded Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme, offering opportunities for pursuing doctoral studies in Hong Kong starting from the upcoming academic session.

Initiated by the Research Grants Council (RGC) of Hong Kong in 2009, the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) is designed to draw exceptional and talented students from around the globe, encouraging them to undertake their PhD studies at renowned universities in Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme 2024/25 | Eligibility Criteria To qualify for participation in the program for the upcoming academic year, you must fulfill the following eligibility requirements.

  1. Candidates must be international students aspiring to study in Hong Kong, regardless of their country of origin.
  2. Applicants should possess prior work experience and come from diverse ethnic backgrounds to be eligible for application.
  3. Applicants need to showcase exceptional qualities in terms of academic performance, research potential, effective communication, interpersonal skills, and leadership capabilities.
  4. While candidates’ academic achievements hold primary importance, the Selection Panels will also consider the following factors:
    • Academic excellence
    • Research capacity and potential
    • Communication and interpersonal skills
    • Leadership abilities

Eligible Participating Universities Prospective candidates should seek admission as new full-time PhD students at any of the following eight eligible participating universities:

  • City University of Hong Kong
  • Hong Kong Baptist University
  • Lingnan University
  • The Chinese University of Hong Kong
  • The Education University of Hong Kong
  • The Hong Kong Polytechnic University
  • The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology
  • The University of Hong Kong

Fellowship Benefits

  • The Fellowship provides an annual stipend of HK$331,200 (approximately US$42,460) and a conference and research-related travel allowance of HK$13,800 (approximately US$1,760) per year for each awardee for a period up to three years.
  • 300 PhD Fellowships will be awarded in the 2024/25 academic year (Universities in Hong Kong normally start their academic year in September).
  • For awardees who need more than three years to complete the PhD degree, additional support may be provided by the chosen universities.
