The Swiss Government offers two types of scholarships for foreign scholars and artists, respectively:
- Research Scholarship: The research scholarship is open to post-graduate researchers in any discipline who hold a minimum of a master’s degree and plan to pursue further studies at the doctoral or post-doctoral level in Switzerland. These scholarships are awarded for research or study at Swiss cantonal universities, universities of applied sciences, federal institutes of technology, and four research institutes. Candidates must be nominated by an academic mentor at one of these higher education institutions to be considered.
- Art Scholarship: Art scholarships are available for art students seeking to pursue an initial master’s degree in Switzerland. They are awarded for study at Swiss conservatories or universities of the arts. However, this scholarship is only open to students from a limited number of countries.
The Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships target young researchers from abroad who have completed a master’s degree or PhD, as well as foreign artists holding a bachelor’s degree. Ideal candidates should meet the following criteria:

- Admission to a Master’s or PhD program.

The Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS) evaluates scholarship applications based on three key criteria:

- Quality of the research project or artistic work.
- Synergies and potential for future research cooperation.
